Let’s face this. You’re tired of this already. The tacos are fantastic, but you miss your morning toast. The hotel is spectacular, but you can’t wait to crawl into your bed again. You have already crossed all the places you need to see on your list.
When packing up, you start thinking about all the responsibilities you have left home. Your PTO was well spent, but that doesn’t exempt you from all the tasks loaded on your desk. You will visit your parents on weekends and take the dogs for walks. You wonder why you dread the trip back equally as being away from home.
Chances are, you’re not alone. According to our Joy Lab nationwide survey, about half of the respondents feel positive about returning home, while the other half feel neutral or negative. This is one of the most divisive factors when it comes to the joy of traveling.
Maybe you are happy to be home because the vacation satisfied your search for rest and adventure, OR maybe you’re happy to be home because the vacation became tiring, and you were ready to get home. We all have different reasons to linger somewhere, physically and mentally.
The truth is, that our perspective changes the angle. In a time where many major cities are becoming void of third spaces, vacations are more sought after than ever. Suddenly, all of us either head on a plane for some peace of mind or tune inward and make our homes the sanctuary.
As a way to preserve our energy, homes become sacred and a museum of our mundane but beautiful lives. While we can’t argue our homes are as luxurious as a resort, the ordinary life we lead in our homes becomes the reason we long to go home. Are we encouraging you to stay home more? We are not. But, we believe the souvenir your trips, no matter how far, could someday adorn your home. Or at least, being away would make you miss it more.
